Setup Password protected directory in cPanel

Set Up a Password Protected Directory in cPanel

This article explains how to password protect directories for increased security. Log into the cPanel account, not the WHM. To do this, you will need to goto https://Your_IP_Address:2083 or http://Your_IP_Address:2082.

Scroll down until you see "Password Protect Directories". Click on this to proceed.

You will now be in the directory selection screen. Click on the directory that you wish to setup the password protection on to proceed.

You will now be in the user creation screen. Here you will verify that you wish to setup the password protection and also on what directory. Please note that it gives you the ability to setup the directory that needs to have password protection enabled. So if you wanted to password protect the download directory as in this example, you would actually have to access "Public Html" first and then have it create the download directory. cPanel only allows you to password protect directories that it creates.

    1. To proceed, check the box for "Password protect this directory" and then give the directory a name.
    2. Click Save.
    3. cPanel will confirm and verify now that the directory has been created. Click on "Go Back" to proceed.
    4. Now create a user and a password.
    5. Click on "Add/modify authorized user".
    6. cPanel will confirm and verify now that the user has been created. Click on "Go Back" to proceed.

You'll now see that you have authorized users at the bottom for this directory. You also have the option of adding new users or deleting existing users.
